Hatching egg and chick pricing

In a world where a dozen eggs in the grocery store cost upwards of $10 and everyone is losing their minds about bird flu: I get it. Some people are absolutely taking advantage of the frenzy. I see other farms upping their prices simply because they can. I see new chicken owners getting absolutely had because they aren’t educated on all of the technical chicken jargon and don’t understand what they’re even purchasing.

Not every chicken is created equal and not every “farm fresh egg” is worth the carton it’s sitting in.

Pricing structure for any hard-fought farm product is kind of a joke. We’re not making a profit and nine times out of ten, we aren’t even breaking even. A great example is the harvesting and processing of honey. It’s overwhelmingly time-consuming, back-breaking physical work to haul full honey supers, extremely messy to process and expensive to maintain healthy beehives. But no one is going to pay $67 for a few ounces of my blood, sweat and tears. So if you’re like us and you’re not going to cut corners on quality, you attempt to streamline the process as best as you can but price according to other folks or what feels reasonable.

The very first job I had as a teenager was at an idyllic family-run farm store and pumpkin patch (Schramm Farm and Orchards). I learned a lot about hard, honest work and all of the labor that goes into getting fresh produce on the shelf. I remember Mr. Schramm saying to us, “If you wouldn’t feed it to your grandma, don’t sell it.” There is a lot of unavoidable waste and loss in every single type of farm. But losing livestock or having to mercy-cull is also often very sad and stressful.

All of this to say: we proudly stand behind ALL of our birds, our products and our pricing.

  • When you purchase hatching eggs or chicks from us, you are receiving third (and beyond) generation heritage organic eggs. Our birds are free to roam and forage for bugs just as God intended in our beautiful forest every single day.

  • Much of our flock includes highly sought-after rare heritage breeds. We have paid far more for our own hatching eggs than we’ve ever sold a dozen for.

  • We take feed quality very seriously and painstakingly source the highest quality homemade feed. It is 100% certified organic, nongmo. Our birds don’t ever receive any scraps that aren’t organic because we don’t eat that way either and we wouldn’t eat conventional eggs.

  • We grow our own organic herbs and ferment our chicken feed to boost immunity and gut health.

  • We check for egg fertility regularly. We introduce fresh bloodlines every single year.

  • We know how to ship eggs safely! We ship eggs all over the country and have only ever had 1 damage claim (due to rough package handling).

  • We have worked hard for the past 5 years to breed for temperament, egg shell color and laying consistency. We are incredibly proud of our current flock and our dozen eggs.

  • Praise God, but in almost 7 years and who-even-knows how many hundreds of birds, we have literally NEVER had any sick birds. Not one.

I know how unusual that is because I often get messages asking “how do you all treat _____?” and “you’re so lucky you’ve never had to deal with ______!” But it is not luck. It’s knowledge, effort, attentiveness, gut-health, cleanliness, and nutrition.

If you just want a few chicks, don’t care about breeds, or are planning to feed your birds Purina, then by all means, head to Tractor Supply or get a dozen hatching eggs for $20. But if you care enough about variety, quality, small local farms, sustainability practices and health to inquire about our pricing or order, know that you will get what you pay for every time.

We so appreciate those who ‘get it’ and we thank you for your support. Hatching eggs and chicks are preorder + deposit only.
